It’s common sense that it’s cheaper and easier to find ways to make more from your existing customer base than it’s to acquire new customers. If you’re running a WooCommerce store, one of the best things you can do to accomplish this is to increase your average order value (AOV). This is where upsells are particularly powerful, especially when they are post-purchase and can be added to the customer’s order with a single click. Unfortunately, WooCommerce doesn’t have this functionality built-in and you must rely on third-party tools to add any upsells, downsells, or cross-sells you wish to offer.
In this blog, we’ll cover the best options for adding upsells and similar actions to WooCommerce.
Product Bundles
Product Bundles is a plugin made by the WooCommerce team, and while it doesn’t directly offer upsells, it’s worth mentioning because it’s an ‘official’ option that allows you to provide product bundling upsells before the checkout phase.
This multi-feature plugin does offer upsells and downsells, but they can only be displayed on the product page or the cart page, not in any of the checkout steps. In addition, it offers the following features:
- PDF invoicing
- Product input fields
- Display localized currencies
- Basic checkout customization features
- Offer product add-ons
- Button customization
- Custom payment gateways
- Emails and additional administrative tools
- Install the plugin
- Go to WooCommerce > Product Bundles
- Create a new product and choose “Product Bundle” as its type
- Add all products you want to include in this bundle
- Set the pricing and discount rules
- Click Publish
Booster for WooCommerce
Booster offers lightweight upsells and cross-sells, along with over 100 features in total, including:
- Place upsell messages on product and cart pages
- Cross-sell enhancements
- Cart notices for promotional messages
- Dynamic pricing and discount rules
Like many of the options on this list, it doesn’t offer a post-purchase upsell option.
- Install and activate
- Navigate to Booster > Modules and turn on the "Upsells" or "Cross-sells" modules.
- Configure where and how upsells are displayed.
- Enable cart notices to show promotional messages
One Click Upsell Funnel for WooCommerce Pro
This plugin, named like a product on Amazon attempts to capture every search term, focusing on a single function: post-purchase upsells on WooCommerce. In case it wasn’t obvious.
- Works with Divi Theme and Elementor Page Builder
- Category-based offer or product-based offers
- Accept payments from multiple gateways
- Included no code upsell pagebuilder
- Install the plugin using WP Swings, activate it.
- Navigate to WooCommerce > One Click Upsell Funnels.
- Create a funnel and select trigger products.
- Add an upsell (or many) and fill in the copy and pricing.
- Enable the funnel.
Smart Offers for WooCommerce
This plugin by StoreApps allows both pre and post-purchase one-click upsells, cross-sells, and down-sells. Additionally, it features sales-based elements such as giveaways, Buy-One-Get-One-Free (BOGO) offers, dynamic pricing, and order bumps. If you need a simple plugin that does one thing well, in this case, offering upsells and offering some discounts, this is the option we would recommend.
- Install the plugin
- Go to WooCommerce > Smart Offers > Add New Offer.
- Choose a trigger condition.
- Add the upsell product and choose your layout and call-to-action
- Enable the offer
Checkout Add-Ons for WooCommerce
Offer add-ons to customer purchases and upsells. This plugin is mainly focused on service based add-ons, like tips, warranty, shipping insurance, or rush handling, but it allows you to completely customize the fields you add. This plugin, like many, only allows you to add these add-ons and upsells before the checkout has taken place.
- Install the plugin
- Go to WooCommerce > Checkout Add-ons
- Create a new add-on, give it a label, and set a price
- Choose where to display the add-on and link it to products or categories
- Click Save
